I've Thought About Quitting

I have been feeling a bit sad over here at ChickinBoots these past few days.  Someone stole the following image that I created one year ago:

The person removed my ChickinBoots watermark and added their own page name to it.  The tampered image has now been shared hundreds of thousands of times.  My first reaction: angry, sad and frustrated.  I spend so much time creating my art and to have an image stolen out from under me and tampered with is heartbreaking.  I reached out to the page owner about taking it down. They eventually did but before agreeing to doing so had the audacity to ask me to prove to them that this image did in fact belong to ChickinBoots. Really?!
Because of my frustration and sadness I have felt this past week I actually contemplated shutting down ChickinBoots.  But after a few days of thinking things through I realized that quitting was not the answer.  If I quit I would let the people who do these kinds of things win.  I would also let down the people who support me…

When Life Gives You Lemons

I had a couple of internet trolls get me down last week.  After some time reflecting on the situation I decided not to share these stories because then I would be giving the trolls the attention they are looking for. Instead, I'm going to turn this situation into a positive one and share some of the great stories and posts that wonderful chickens keepers like yourself have taken the time to share with me.   Kayla B.  "Just graduated college and used your lovely ChickinBoots inspiration for my cap!!"

Jacqueline L.  "Co-parenting at it's best...these 2 sister hens had been broody for months.  I went and bought them each a chick and snuck them under the girls at night.  They are always right next to each other with a chick under each of them!"

Kelly T.  "Hi!  I don't know your religion, but my Buff Orpington hen, Crystal, got attacked by a dog yesterday and she needs lots of prayers for her recovery.  Thank you"

I Am Losing My Mind...

Parts of our backyard look like the surface of the moon.   Why, you ask?
Because of this... We've grown tired of this drab look and are now attempting to create our backyard into a beautiful sanctuary, but achieving this has proven to be quite challenging when one has to landscape with chickens in mind.  I have had some serious ups and downs with the whole process.  One day I am thinking excitedly that incorporating chickens into a landscaped garden can be done with careful planning. Then the next day I am discouraged when I realize the chickens have taken out half my hops that were planted in a pot two feet off the ground.
Yesterday I had a breaking moment.  I wanted to give up...either the gardening or the chickens. Having both just seems impossible.  But today I woke up determined again to make it work and I promise to share with you once I figure it all out.  I sure hope I don't lose my sanity.  Anyone have any tips besides locking the ladies up full time?
Cheers, Sarah

Why You Gotta Be So Mean?

If you follow my blog and social media, then you know Nelly.  She is our overly-friendly Buff Orpington hen who thinks she is more of a lap dog than a chicken.  So much so that I wrote a children's book about it. She is the first to greet you when going outside, she follows you around the yard and gets in the middle of everything. When family and friends come over they are always amazed and entertained by her friendly antics.

But there's actually a side of Nelly you may not know about...a dark side.  Nelly is not a fan of our sweet, 11-year-old yellow lab named Kramer.  She's a bit of a bully.  (So much so I wrote a children's book about this, too!)  If Kramer comes anywhere near Nelly she lets him have it!  But what amazes me about the bullying is Kramer's patience.  This dog could end Nelly's life in a second if he wanted to, but he doesn't.  I understand that Kramer's animal instincts could kick in one day and he could get deadly revenge, but the bull…

I Didn't Know I Could Do This!

I was so excited when Sustainable Seed Company sent Nelly and I their Poultry Package and new Happy Hen Nest Box! I was intrigued when they explained to me that their Poultry Package is designed to allow people to grow their own poultry feed. I've never given a thought that growing my own feed was something I could do!

So what's in this Poultry Package?

The Poultry Package contains the following:
4 oz of Reid's Yellow Dent Corn 2 oz of Grain Sorghum 6 grams of Ford Hook Chard 4 grams of Connecticut Field Pumpkins 4 oz of White Proso Millet 4 oz of Peas 2 oz of Oats 1 oz of Flax 1 pkg of Tobacco

Where Did She Go?

My 5-year-old daughter used to run this blog. She really did!  If you have followed ChickinBoots from the beginning, you probably remember The Junior Blogger.  Once a week my kindergartner would give advice about chicken keeping.  She would draw her pictures and then tell me what to type.  Her sweet blogging even gained attention from expert chicken keepers like Lisa Steele from Fresh Eggs Daily
So where did she go?  She is now 7-years-old and other activities have captured her attention.  She still loves her chickens and spends time with them when she can, but she has become quite the dancer and spends much of her free time at the studio.  She loves it!
Just recently she mentioned wanting to write another chicken post and with summer break approaching I think it's just the thing we will do!  In the meantime come check out some of her past blog posts. They are sure to make you smile!

Week in Review: Mishaps Happen

As I mentioned earlier this week, my husband I am are in the middle of transforming our muddy, dark, depressing backyard into a peaceful, chicken-friendly (hopefully!) yard. I am attempting to train my chickens  (or as Scratch and Peck Feeds calls it, bribe!) to stay away from our newly planted shrubs.  So far it has been a success and we have only had one mishap.  One of our newly planted shrubs got a bit trampled. The chickens weren't interested in eating the plant, but instead were wanting to scratch through the new soil. Solution? Rocks around the border and we haven't had a problem since! Things are coming together nicely and I can't wait to show you more of what we have done!

Here is a review of what happened on social media this week. Thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your day.  Also, a huge thank you to Hen Happy Coops for co-hosting our giveaway this week.  More fun giveaways coming soon!
Cheers, Sarah
